How To Survive Intermittent Fasting with Turmeric, Coffee and Meal Prep

Leading up to and over the last weekend I was really starting to struggle with my 30 day commitment to intermittent fasting while detoxing and it was more mental than anything else. Fasting for at least 16 hours per day gives me an 8 hour window to consume any type of calorie and I started seriously missing raw honey in my morning coffee and resenting having to wait until after-noon to break-fast and have a superfood smoothie or homemade plant-based meal.

Losing Motivation with Fasting

The first two weeks of my 30-Day Shot of Gold Anti-Inflammatory Detox + Intermittent Fasting commitment were a breeze – just like it was the first time I did it back in April – but after entering week three it started to feel like a chore and I was losing motivation. Why? With my busy schedule and erratic work schedule, I wasn’t carving out the time to meal prep enough healthy, anti-inflammatory dishes and snacks with turmeric and other superfoods. Of course we are all busy and this is no excuse but it is an explanation.

How To Make Fasting An Enjoyable Success

I spent all of last Sunday buying groceries and re-stocking my pantry and fridge with densely nutritious foods, meal-prepping both raw and cooked dishes and snacks, as well as chatting with people in Canada, the US and even India about their journey with intermittent fasting and specifically the role coffee plays. While spending all afternoon and evening making food and listening to good tunes I grazed on everything I was preparing and WOW did I ever feel amazing yesterday. I quite literally had a breakthrough (read about it on Instagram.) My energy was back to sky-rocketing levels, I was super happy and positive, I had one of the strongest and longest workouts I’ve had in the last couple of years and felt excited and focused on completing the last week and a half of my detox + fast.

Black coffee is the only thing you’re allowed to consume while you’re fasting for 16 hours (or more) and I know I’m not alone when I say THANK GOD FOR COFFEE! It mimics my usual morning routine (sans-honey) and gives me energy without interrupting my body’s process of burning fat/creating ketones. I always have Shot of Gold turmeric in my coffee to kick-start fighting inflammation throughout the day (inflammation in our cells, joints, brain etc. from exercise, poor lifestyle choices and external toxins is one of the major causes of almost every single disease and cancer in the world. Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, created an intermittent fasting regime that he promises is an ‘easy bio-hack making it possible to lose fat and build muscle without feeling hungry or tired,’ and it involves coffee with a couple additional high-fat ingredients (more about it here.) I’ve never tried it because it involves dairy but I am keen to start experimenting with black coffee, turmeric, cinnamon and organic unrefined extra virgin coconut oil. I whipped up this mixture with a huge scoop of raw honey after I broke my fast on Sunday and it was seriously delicious and filling! Coconut oil has about 40 calories per teaspoon so it’s not officially allowed on most IF regimens but it is a healthy high-fat food with myriad benefits (high-fat foods like avocado, nuts, nut butters and oils like coconut and olive are highly recommended to consume in large quantities during the 8 hour window while detoxing + fasting.)

James Alofs, founder of Canadian startup Evrgrn Coffee, reached out to me recently and is fueling the rest of my detox + fast with his organic single-origin coffee beans, every bag of which represents 30 trees planted or 12 square feet of land protected. Life After Detoxing + Fasting

I feel so grateful that my enthusiasm for my detox and fast has returned and that I’m once again feeling like dancing in the streets! After today I’ll have only one week left and then I will definitely start experimenting with coconut oil in my morning coffee. Who knows, maybe I’ll make that version of intermittent fasting a part of my everyday lifestyle. And if not, I’m cool with that too. Life is about balance and enjoyment as much as it is about being clean and healthy.
