Women Supporting Women | Shot of Gold Turmeric Founder Marissa Bronfman
Just over two weeks ago I stood on the 5th floor of my co-working space looking down on the eerie intersection at Union Station and realized that Covid-19 was going to have a much larger impact than any of us had previously thought. Surrounded by other passionate small businesses owners, all of us confused and growing anxious, I knew that we would all have to pivot and adapt to this new world if there was going to be any chance of survival for our startups. I also knew I had to find a way to get turmeric into people’s lives because it is – and has always been – nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory (inflammation = disease) and one of the most effective ways to boost immunity.
I started chatting with women in Toronto who own healthy cafes and restaurants about stocking Shot of Gold turmeric for their customers and quickly realized that if we didn’t come together to support each other and ask for help, that this global pandemic could ravage us all. I heard heart-breaking story after story about financial distress, having to fire valuable employees, physical and mental health issues – you name it. Being a female entrepreneur is one of the hardest things to do during the best of times, it’s difficult to put into words what it’s like now.
So here are the words directly from these women who I so admire. Courageous, indefatigable, pioneering goddesses! It’s time to share our hopes, our fears, our plans, our asks of the community and advice for others. Women Supporting Women is a series born out of a dark time to take us toward the light. Stay tuned for interviews with women from across Toronto and beyond. We’re stronger together. Much love.
1. What’s the status of your business? Did you have to pivot, go online, temporarily close?
Shot of Gold is valiantly launching earlier than the late-spring launch I had been planning for months and truthfully, I am excited by the prospect of getting more turmeric to more people because there has never been a more important time for building immunity and fighting inflammation with superfoods. We are partnering with many of the superhuman women you’ll see in this Women Supporting Women series to make it easy for people to add our turmeric blends to their takeout and delivery orders of delicious meals and food kits. We’ve got an amazing grocery deal around the corner (thanks to one of our super-women!) and I hope many more to come. We’re now available online again and very happy to ship to your homes.
While global events have definitely impacted plans to produce season one of SUPERfood The Series, I am grateful that my work to make it happen led to meeting Emily Green, who became an instant friend and is now a very special and integral part of Shot of Gold’s future. The Universe works in mysterious ways.
2. What’s been the hardest part of this pandemic for you?
Trying to counter feelings of fear and anxiety with relentless optimism and hope in the face of terrifying statistics and projections for global economics and politics. Will it be a new awakening or a return to the Dark Ages?
3. What can we as a community do for you?
I’m going to take the advice I give in the next section (why is it always so hard to take our own advice?!) and ask the community to please support Shot of Gold by purchasing our beautiful turmeric blends. If we’re sold out, please pre-order or buy a gift card to use later! It helps us be able to put the next batch together. We’ve got super cozy hoodies and tank tops for working from home and as always, we’re giving a portion of every single sale back to schoolgirls in India through our charity partner. If you can’t make a purchase, spread the love! Tell your friends, ask your favorite grocery store to stock us, like our posts on Instagram and share them in your stories – anything! Huge heartfelt thank you in advance. It is all so meaningful and so appreciated.
4. What advice would you give women?
Ask for help! It is especially hard for women, we are conditioned to be caregivers, to nurture and protect and help those around us. As female entrepreneurs, we’re also constantly putting on a brave face for our friends, family, customers, social media followers – the world! – while behind the scenes we are doing a million things a minute just to keep it together. There’s power in knowing what you need and asking for it. I am still learning this.
5. What is your greatest hope right now?
That we will emerge from this global awakening with a lasting commitment to protect the planet, protect animals and protect our health through a plant-based lifestyle, spirituality and a deep-rooted interconnectedness.
6. What are the 3 things keeping you sane?
1. Bike rides through High Park and along the lake with happy energetic music in my ears.
2. Sunshine streaming in through my windows.
3. Making nutritious – and delicious! – clean, plant-based meals at home with tons of turmeric and other superfoods like maca, cacao, chia and hemp. Health is wealth.
4. If I may add one more, honestly, connecting with so many passionate, kind, determined female food entrepreneurs and having these daily conversations. Stronger together! The only way out, is through.
